The Zippo is one of the true success stories and an outstanding product. Both in function and in company service. The design is nearly the ultimate in KISS ( Keep It Simple Stupid). Cases to fit every mood, desire and whim. Simple brass, chrome, silver and even Titanium. Embellishments of every description.
And with the advent of the Pipe insert, few things can beat the Zippo for relighting a pipe. Lay the Zippo on top the bowl and draw in a few puffs. On the down-side…..trying to initially light a pipe with a Zippo is, well pure frustration. It can be done, eventually. And then there is that Zippo fuel “aroma”….
Years ago, Zippo actually made a pressurized insert for the Zippo. But for some reason, they were dropped from production shortly after. But now, another butane insert is available, called the Z-Plus. A simple pressurized “torch-type” lighter that is designed to fit in any standard Zippo case. The Z-Plus is made by Blazer, they guys that pioneered the “torch” lighter.
The Z-Plus is a single flame of significant power. The flame is a good 2 inches long and ends in a perfect directed point. Torch-type lighter, so what you are thinking, can’t use them in a pipe. |
Those of us who are converts to the “Frank” method of pipe packing regularly use a torch lighter, and have zero problems with using them on the beloved briar.
But even those who do not use the “Frank” method, are using single point torches for the initial charring of the surface of the tobacco. Much like charring the end of a cigar, getting the entire surface quickly lit, enhances the smoke and flavor of the tobacco, without sucking that heat into the bowl. The wind resistant nature of the lighter, makes it easy to light even in a stiff breeze.
The Z-Plus runs about 20 bucks, holds a large amount of fuel and is handy to use. I have had one for several months and am totally satisfied. Whether I use the “Frank” method or not, I always use the Z-Plus for the initial charring. Then for the later relights, I use another Zippo, or my trusty Old Boy depending on where I am.
I have seen the Z-Plus in several Tobacco stores and I am sure a quick internet search will find a dealer.
